Basilica Cistern Opening Hours

Basilica Cistern is open daily for standard daytime visits. Tickets sold on this website cover daytime admission only.
  • Daytime Hours: 9:00 AM to 6:30 PM, with last entry at 6:00 PM.
  • Evening Closure: The cistern is closed from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM for Night Shift preparations.
  • Night Shift: Entry from 7:30 PM to 10:00 PM requires a separate Night Shift ticket, which is not sold on this website.
  • Opening hours may change during public holidays, special events, or maintenance work.

Basilica Cistern Visitor Information

Allow approximately 45 minutes for your visit. The available Basilica Cistern ticket is a self-guided experience with a digital audio guide.
  • Digital Guide: Download the app and its content over Wi-Fi before arriving. It works offline inside the cistern.
  • What to Bring: Bring a charged smartphone and your own earphones. Save your ticket before going underground.
  • Inside the Cistern: The interior is dim and humid, and the walkways may be damp. Comfortable, non-slip footwear is recommended.
  • Wheelchair Access: A platform lift is available at the Alemdar Street exit near the tram line. Please follow staff instructions.

Basilica Cistern Rules & Restrictions

Visitors are asked to follow the marked route and help protect the historic structure during their Basilica Cistern visit.
  • Historic Areas: Please do not enter the water, touch or climb the columns and sculptures, or remove coins from the cistern.
  • Walkways: Do not sit or lean on the railings. Children under 15 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
  • Photography: Personal photography is permitted. Flash, tripods, professional lighting, and commercial filming may be restricted restricted or require permission.
  • Prohibited Items: Smoking, cutting tools, weapons, and flammable materials are not permitted.

How to Get to the Basilica Cistern

Basilica Cistern is located on Yerebatan Caddesi in Istanbul’s Sultanahmet district, close to Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque.
  • Address: Alemdar, Yerebatan Caddesi, Fatih, Istanbul, Türkiye.
  • By Tram: Take the T1 tram line to Sultanahmet station. The entrance is a short walk from the stop.
  • Walking: The cistern is less than two minutes from Hagia Sophia and approximately five minutes from the Blue Mosque.
  • By Taxi: Ask for “Yerebatan Sarnıcı.” Traffic restrictions may require your driver to stop a short walk from the entrance.
